Processor
Processor performance is mainly affected by two things: clock speed (GHz) and number of cores. A higher clock speed means your computer can perform tasks faster, while more cores means your computer can perform more tasks at the same time. For everyday usage and media, more cores is better. For gaming and processor intensive tasks like encoding video, a higher clock speed is more desirable.
Memory (RAM)
The more memory, the better. 4 GB is plenty for most people. 2 GB is the minimum we recommend for general tasks. 6 or 8 GB is more useful for people who perform intensive tasks like professional media creation and editing, or scientific tasks.
Graphics
Generally, the higher the model number and the higher the price, the faster the graphics. It is also good to note the amount and type of memory. DDR5 will be faster than DDR3, and a higher amount of memory will also positively affect performance.
Hard Drive
A good rule of thumb in choosing hard drive capacity is to look at your current hard drive and see how much capacity you are using. Then multiply that by 2 or 3. 250 GB is plenty for most people, but 500 GB is our recommended choice. A faster spindle speed (7200 vs 5400 RPM) means faster access to data and a faster PC overall. Solid State Drives (SSD) are the fastest by far, and use less power, create less heat, make no noise, and are more resistant to shock. (G-forces)
Optical Drive
Our standard optical drives read and record DVDs and CDs. Upgrade to a Blu-ray drive to read and write Blu-ray discs, DVDs, and CDs.
WiFi/Networking
Every Lotus comes with gigabit (10/100/1000) ethernet for a fast, reliable connection to your network and the internet. With 802.11n WiFi, you can move your Lotus anywhere there's WiFi for complete freedom and fast speeds even at a greater distance than the more common 802.11g standard.
Operating System
Your OS is your choice. Choose Ubuntu Linux for a virtually virus-free and safe environment, supported by open-source initiatives, while still being compatible with the Microsoft Office format, your email, web browser, and more. Choose the edition of Windows 7 that fits you to get the most of the world standard in personal computing. Or choose no OS at all and install any system of your choice when your computer arrives at your door.
